In Brief: Felicia Glidden, a sculptor from the north woods of Minnesota, brings the forces of nature and the psyche into the gallery in the form of striking cast iron and bronze sculptures that resonate on many levels.

Katherine Sharpe, writing recently in the Field Museum’s Seed magazine on Minneapolis’s very popular art-into-life Art Shanty Project, now in its sixth year, writes about the Ped Pex Power Pod, Felicia Glidden’s brainchild, in which participants generate power for coffeemaking and other uses by pedaling on bike frames. “Glidden, a former engineering student, believes that science and art are united by their physical approach to the world,” notes Sharpe. “She became interested in alternative energy while researching whether she could practice sustainable metal casting. Ped Pex is an installation, but it’s also a real experiment in process.”
Glidden’s approach to art has one window open to science, engineering, and technology—her casting process is innovative and experimental, and she helped build the cupolette Aurora for the North Shore Iron Pours that she helped found.
There is also, however, a window open to mysticism in Glidden’s work. Living for many years on the shore of Lake Superior, she developed a way of seeing spirit in matter that seems to grow out of the soil in that region. She lived her commitment to a community of artists and musicians, gathering them around her for days-long music and dance, and involving them in the iron pours that increasingly became a focus for this wide-ranging artist.
Her current long-running series, Matris Fe, or “Mother Iron,” looks back to ancient northern iron mysticisms—the spirit of iron is depicted as a rough heavy head, exploding into shards of energy. This powerful imagery is created in part by the will of the artist, but it also leaves a window open to the mysterious workings of the molten iron itself: a role is always allotted to chance.
Her show at the Marion Royael Gallery will focus on these essential cast metal works, as well as others in which Glidden’s consciousness of process and spirit of adventure are plain. She is calling the spirit of metal to dwell in these forms, to shape them in ways that speak to us across a vast space of material difference: how does metal become knowable by flesh? How can flesh participate in the nature of metal?

"Jonathan Monaghan’s animated video projection “Into Temptation (French Penguin)” stood out in the recent emerging artist show, Vox V, at Vox Populi. The competition to get into the show, which was juried by Ryan Trecartin and Larry Mangel, was fierce; and the immersive installation, which wonderful, made it hard for one work to speak louder than another. Nonetheless, Monaghan’s silent and eerie piece — a mash-up of a cathedral with a penguin — intrigued me. Reverberant of the age-old struggle between flesh and stone; man and animal; religion and the id, the piece has beauty, weirdness, exquisite craftsmanship and a kind of goth-cinematic style. BROOKLYN, NY - May 4, 2009 - The Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA) and the Museum for African Art are proud to present Perspectives: Women, Art and Islam, an exhibition of five female artists whose major connection is their personal relationship with Islam. Perspectives, curated by Kimberli Gant and Lisa Binder, will be on view at MoCADA, 80 Hanson Place in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, from June 4 - September 13, 2009, and is presented in conjunction with Muslim Voices: Arts and Ideas, a multi-institutional celebration of the extraordinary range of artistic expression in the Muslim world.

Spanning three continents and the mediums of video, photography and installation, Perspectives features work by Fariba Alam (Bangladesh), Zoulikha Bouabdellah (Algeria), Mahwish Chisty (Pakistan), Safaa Erruas (Morocco), and Nsenga Knight (Brooklyn), who explore the connections, or lack thereof, between the practice of Islam and the various Muslim communities in their lives. Alam infuses ceramic tiles with personal archival photography of family in Bangladesh; Bouabdellah carves out space for gold high-heels in a series of prayer rugs, and takes self-portraits with couscous pots; Knight interviews Muslim women from her Brooklyn community for a video installation; Christy projects Kufic script into a pool of water; and Erruas uses multiple sections of soft white textiles to set out the gallery's walls as spaces of perceived femininity. Each work challenges preconceptions, defies categorization and raises timely questions about gender and the Islamic faith.

MoCADA and the Museum for African Art proudly join BAM, Asia Society, and New York University's Center for Dialogues as a part of Muslim Voices: Arts and Ideas. Muslim artists and speakers spanning the globe from as far away as Asia, Africa, the Middle East and as near as Brooklyn will gather for an unprecedented ten-day festival and conference. Through performances, films, exhibitions, talks, and other events—ranging from the traditional (calligraphy, storytelling, and Sufi chanting) to the contemporary (video installations and Arabic hip-hop)-the festival offers New York audiences the opportunity to experience and learn about the cultural diversity and multiple perspectives that represent the Muslim world.

Genesis of Form is an exhibition of work by Master of Fine Arts sculptors from Towson University, Maryland Institute College of Art and the University of Maryland College Park. This exhibition deals with the (genesis or) start of a concept or process that culminates in the finished work. Contemporary artists work in multifarious processes and therefore do not have the same starting point; some artists work from sketches, others use words, objects, photos, video and more. The end results, however complete or open-ended, may never resemble the original source material. Whether disjointed or completely cohesive, a dialogue is created between the starting point and the end product. This exhibition gives a glimpse into the many ways in which contemporary artists work and the genesis of their thoughts and processes.

Baltimore, Maryland—Maryland Art Place (MAP) is pleased to present Convergence 09, an exhibition of new work by recent Masters of Fine Art graduates from the Maryland Institute College of Art, The University of Maryland, College Park, Towson University, and The University of Maryland, Baltimore County. College Park, MD— The Stamp Gallery presents Midpoint, an exhibition of work by five artists in their second year of MFA candidacy at the University of Maryland. Featuring artists Jack Henry, Joseph Hoffman, Timothy Horjus, Sarah Laing and Stewart Watson, Midpoint offers a look at the diverse works being produced by these candidates.

About the Artists:
Flint, Michigan, where Jack Henry is from, is an automotive town, where abandoned factories and houses fill the suburban landscape. The buildings reveal a rich visual history in their decrepit state, far more interesting than if they had been covered with a fresh coat of paint. Henry’s work is an attempt to capture the essence of that imperfect beauty.

Joseph Hoffman’s most recent works pair the subtle qualities of sound along side its more brazen traits. He explores how sound shapes our interactions with the world around us. As Anne Fernald tells us, “Sound is touch at a distance.” Hoffman is interested in exploring the qualities of sound and its affect on our psyche.

Timothy Horjus’s work evokes a contemporary reality by utilizing the language of modernism to discuss our reliance on digitally produced and transmitted information. The titles of his work are inspired by the anonymous subject lines of spam emails. Horjus assigns as titles to his works the spam subject lines allowing the paintings to function conceptually.

Sarah Laing’s work centers on her interests in the universality of our biological make-up and landscape; combined with the collective sense of the sublime. The imagery in her work is derived from landscape photographs which have been removed from their original context, rotated, and multiplied. They then evolve to take on ambiguous abstract forms that can be seen in a micro/macro context: animal or landscape, recognizable yet alien.

There is a common conceptual thread in Stewart Watson’s work – a fascination with the point at which two things meet. While that point of contact continues to speak of weakness and controlled failure, this new body of work is drawn from her interest in her genealogical history as developed through natural genetic patterning and created codes and languages.

The Stamp Gallery is located on the first floor of the Stamp Student Union on the campus of the University of Maryland, College Park. The gallery is free and open to the public Mondays-Thursdays 10:00am – 8:00pm; Fridays 10:00am – 6:00am, and Saturdays

At the Arlington Arts Center this August and September, Washington independent curator, artist, teacher, and critic Rex Weil will present a show focused on the intersection of politics and art-terrain that seldom seems to be explored by artists and galleries in and around the nation's capital.

Picturing Politics 2008 will supply a corrective, examining a wide array of strategies used in the contemporary visual arts for addressing controversial issues and promoting progressive social change-all against the backdrop of a political landscape dominated by mass media.

Nine individual artists and five collaborative projects will be included in seven separate gallery spaces on two floors of the AAC.

Jose Ruiz: installation addressing the struggles of immigrant workers in Northern Virginia with issues of identity, class and intolerance

Rick Reinhard: photographs documenting political demonstrations in the Metro Washington, DC area

Just when I thought I was tired of pop art (i.e. Koons, Murakami) Richard Prince brought me right back. The show, which covers the last 30 years of Prince's career, was a breath of fresh air in comparison to the heavy Kara Walker retrospective at the Whitney. The momentum of the dot-com era infused media art with a heady energy, artists, many switching from analog to digital equipment, tried their hands at a range of newly invented art forms. They built interactive installations, electronic publishing networks, and art for the Internet. Technology evolved so fast that in some cases an art form may have disappeared while an artist’s work was still in the making.

By the year 2000, this quasi-revolutionary aura had dissipated and media art had settled into the mainstream. Automatic Update features several installations from this later period. They are mature works that ease the somber mood of the times with entertaining presentations. Nevertheless, their humor does not soften their biting commentary on our social milieu. What at one time was Pop art has now become pop life.

The exhibition is organized by Barbara London, Associate Curator, Department of Media.

A related series of films and videos is screened in the Titus Theaters from July 7 to September 2.

Hey everyone

Soooo since the last time we talked, there have been many many new things happening. I live in my studio now, which is good and bad, good for work, bad for soaking in the culture. None the less, I have managed to make it out to do some good old art watching. First on the list, I recently saw a show of chinese artists, mostly video. Highlights for me were Yu Xudong pill and candy. here is a link with a few stills from the piece. Also there was Cao Fei with is piece Cos Players. All in all an interesting show, the work, i think, (at least to the best of my translation from estonian) was about celebrating life and taking a step back from the seriousness of it all. Very cool. And if you know me, you kow that it takes a lot for video work to impress me...

so next, in helsinki, at the Finnish contemproary arts museum Kiasma a show on the role of landscape in contemporary art. A great show if i may say so. There was your conventional Long, Morris, and Oppenheim that you might expect in this kind of show, but also A few Finnish artists that really stole the show for me. One, Tuula Närhinen and her piece wind tracers. She noticed that the wind, while playing a vital part in the experience of the land, disapears in almost all forms of landscape. so she puts bright lights on tree branches and photographs them with long exposure time so that the wind moving the branch traces a light path on the film. Very cool. Also, in sculpture department Lauri Astala Songlines. This peice was my favorite. play the audio at this link to get a better feel for things.

In other news, I have been set up with a few exhibitions, a solo show at the sculpture Gallery, as well as the Erasmus show in the old town. Also In a group show with some students from the Finnish art academy on the Paldiski penninsula. here.

no real other news, other than busting ass and finally making some reasonable art. I found a bag of old soviet gasmasks.... hmmm what to do with those?

I have also started doing drawings of trucks and tools with cosmetics on glass. they are fun, but not really that interesting. Well whatever. hope all is well there, I probably should spell check this but i am not going to. too bad i guess. maybe pictures soon.

Hey dudes.

I attended the Stockholm art fair this week. Sounds cool right? Not so much though. The sculpture that I helped build was one of only a few examples of contemporary sculpture at the fair. There seemed to be a sort of generation gap there. things were either craft, or contemporary, or classical. Not much to get fussed about. Villu Jaanisoo, the artist I am working with, was kind of the surprise hit of the show, (partly because his sculpture was so damn loud) (this was where i would like to embed a video of the piece but the connection will not allow it.)

The coolest thing that went on was across town at an opening I kind of gatecrashed, at Magasin 3 , a sort of Swedish WPA/c. The art was great, but unfortunately as things go, the better the art the weirder the crowd. Pipilotti Rist gave a quick blurb about her work and a thanks for coming, but the work pretty much spoke for itself. There was also a series of prints from the Chapman brothers on display, pity they weren't there though, I hear that they are wild guys.

in closing, i really need someone to pick up a sculpture at the WPAC office, because it was apparently too heavy for their auction and balancing it made it inappropriate for their needs. If anyone can do this for me, or is going to be in DC sometime soon, please let me know.

My first blog - holy cow! Haha. Hey Meg, great job on the open studio - thanks (once again) for all your effort.
Some of us are interested in making the lounge area a bit more pleasant or presentable esp. since this semester we are expecting plenty of visitors. Let's make a date for a few of us to do some of the work - it would not take long with 3 or 4 of us. How do you feel about that? Doable?

So whats up dudes

I have seen the facilities and have my work cut out for me, literally.
I am currently working on refurbishing a room that i will get to live in rent free which is awesome. Next week, we start with the studio, my assistantship here involves rebuilding a foundry, including ceramic shell and resin bonded sand, bronze, aluminum, iron, copper, and glass. and when I say rebuild i mean basically mean build. there are remnants of a foundry here, but the sculpture department has big plans.
Oh, and as an extra challenge, the whole thing has to be wired with 220, and it has to run on oil. two things which i know very little (nothing) about.

But we have an experienced staff and enthusiastic students, so it seems very possible.
Now if i can just squeeze time to make art into this, things would be all set.

I hope the studio tour goes well, just remember that all my sales go through Pete. Pete I can trust you with all the money I'll make right? Meg you are in charge of keeping tabs on how many people ask if my studio is a storage space.

It is cold in estonia. There is snow everywhere. I met the other students and had a tour of the facilities. things look great, there is glass working here, and i am eager to get into that. The school seems to have its base in clasical styles, with newwer staff adding a more contemporary point of view. Here is a link to the schools website Kunstiakadeemia. The language is tough, it is humbling, to be able to talk, literally only when spoken to. most people here speak english, but not primarily, and everyone seems to speak more than one language.

Before I left, I had a dream that was in Spanish, or spanish gibberish, except i could understand everything that was said. I dont speak Spanish, not well enough to dream in it anyway. I think i had gotten druk before i went to sleep that night. Maybe that was it.

Either way, I am hoping that i can use some of the snow that is around tomorrow, and hopefully by then i will have pictures to post.

So, does any one want to talk about relationality and/or autonomy? It seems pertinent to some of the conversations I’ve been having with fellow grads recently. I saw a presentation last year at CAA called “From database and place to bio-tech and bots: relationality vs autonomy in media art.” It got me looking at Bourriaud and Bey. Jeremy, you’ve read Bourriaud, non?

Most of us are functioning as image makers, in the sense that the work will be viewed after the fact via video or photo documentation. As artists, are you complicit in that relationship or do you take it on?

How do some of you use the spectacle in your work? How does your work negotiate a pull towards academicism? Do you employ traditional forms, or go with the aura of the new(er) medias?

Pictures--or the lack thereof

It's a tired, tired strategy, but so many young painters keep throwing their time and effort into it: Take a piece of canvas or paper--unprimed, or stained with some monochrome wash--and scrawl a tangle of graphic signifiers across it, like you're laying out a picnic spread of pictorial conventions.

I see it with Jiha Moon's blooms of watercolor that carry along fauns and dragons and clumps of silly string at their edges, or Maggie Michael's knots of airbrush, pooled enamel and calligraphy. I saw it at Irvine's old location last year, with Nicola Lopez, who makes apocalyptic doodles using blotches of ink, ruled lines, and cartoonish drawings of drain-pipe labyrinths...and I saw it last weekend at their current front room survey of works on paper--clearing out old inventory, natch. There's Christine Kessler's greatest-hits-of-Rauschenberg-and-Twombly collages, or Susan Jamison's graphite and string drawings of birds, hands, and spiders against blank backdrops, or Peregrine Hong's unicorn kiddie-porn drawings, or...well, it just goes on and on.

Nobody's interested in pictorial space or chiaroscuro or even composition, it seems. The page or the canvas becomes an arena in which to have fey little graphics, detached from context, fumbling around one another--an illustrator's warmed-over approximation of good ol' flat-bed construction.

Decorative, unnecessary, played-out. A lot of gallery-goers mistake these pictures for actual displays of skill. Instead, they're avoidance strategies. Why choose the rectangle if you're not interested in it? Why use the tools of illusionistic rendering to dot the unconsidered page with little episodic meanderings?

What about pictures? And I don't mean illusionistic windows onto another space or anything--just the evidence of an artist looking at the substrate/format and responding to it in some constructive, considered, foundational way.

That's my big, obvious rant for the evening, anyway.

Very sad that they're shuttering the doors on the space-age garage. Now there will officially be no reason whatsoever to go to Chinatown.

Except for maybe Flashpoint. Which is only almost a reason.

Otherwise, it's vanity galleries in a repulsive Georgetown-like setting. Whee!

I wanted to go, but had to *bring the rock* to the Velvet lounge. Which we did, albeit sloppily. An improvised cover of "Thriller" was attempted for reasons that still elude me.

So, there you have it. Post number two. Thoughts?
